Is It Your Goals or The Mission Statement That’s Important?

January 13, 2012 No Comments by Audra

A Couple of days ago I had my weekly Mastermind call and during this time we each shared what some of our New Year goals are and how we are going to excel in 2012.  One of the members in our group brought up needing to decide what his mission statement is.  I found this to be very interesting as many of us do not circle back around to make sure the personal and professional goals are complimenting our overall mission statement.  So I thought I would talk a bit about what a mission statement is and why we should all have one to guide our goal setting and ensure we are spending time on the right things in the end accomplish our mission and vision of our company.

One of the most important things that entrepreneurs should do when they create their business is to define their organization’s purpose, and identify what they ultimately want it to accomplish. They would communicate this information in their mission and vision statements. These are created to set a clear course for the company, inform all the team members what they should focus their efforts, and prevent the organization from getting off track.

Why Create Mission Statement?

When you envision your business and all the amazing things you hope to accomplish you are already thinking about what the mission will be.  You may want to help others, solve a problem or create a product that revolutionizes the world.  Whatever it is, you need to spend some time defining your version of success. Otherwise, it will be hard to know what you are trying to achieve and how your actions will get you one step closer to achieving this success.

By creating a personal mission statement, you make one of your personal goals supremely important. This gives you the best possible chance of achieving it, which is essential for some types of goal. However, if you focus exclusively on one goal, you’ll inevitably have to de-emphasize others. Make sure that you’re happy to do this, and make sure that people who are important to you don’t suffer as a consequence.

Make sure to revisit your vision and mission statements as your goals of the organization shift and evolve over time.

Note to self:  Do what you love and your mission statement will show itself.  Live your passion and it will create the goals you need to get you on your life’s path!
